While the Grateful Dead never performed the song live in full, the first three sections of the song (usually denoted as simply "Terrapin Station") became commonplace in the band's setlists. The piece, split up into seven distinct movements, is the band's longest studio recording at sixteen minutes and twenty-three seconds long.
